What Are Number Bonds?
A visual way to understand how a whole number is made from parts—and why that matters later.
Number bonds are simple diagrams that show how a whole number is composed of parts. They build flexible addition and subtraction thinking.
A number bond shows how one whole number can be split into parts. For example, 8 can be made from 5 and 3, 6 and 2, or 7 and 1. Seeing these part–whole relationships helps children calculate flexibly.
Why number bonds matter
Number bonds support addition, subtraction, place value, and later algebraic thinking. A child who knows that 8 is 5 and 3 can use that relationship in both 5 + 3 = 8 and 8 − 5 = 3.
How to teach them visually
Start with eight counters. Move them into two groups and name the parts. Draw the whole above the parts, then connect the picture to equations. Change the split and ask what stayed the same.
